Visit the famous Swiss winter mountains

Visiting a Swiss mountain by cable car, train or funicular is a wonderful winter day trip. You can have snow fun, such as sledding or snowtubing. The panoramic views of the snowy Alps are amazing. Or lean back at a sunny terrace and watch others ski!

Mountains with snow fun

The best Swiss mountains to play in the snow are Sunnegga-Rothorn, Titlis, Glacier 3000 and Grindelwald-First. Sledding, zip lines and more fun snow activities are available here.

  • Sunnegga-Rothorn (3103 m / 10180 ft) is accessible from Zermatt. All 3 stations of the Sunnegga-Blauherd-Rothorn mountain offer magnificent Matterhorn views and lots of winter activities. There’s a kid’s ski park at Sunnegga. A snow hike can be made to the modern Blue Lounge mountain restaurant from Blauherd.
  • Titlis (3032 m / 9947 ft) is located near Engelberg in Central Switzerland. You’ll have amazing views of the snow-covered Central and Bernese Alps. The snow fun park at mid-station Trübsee offers a lot of fun activities.
  • Glacier 3000 (3000 m / 9842 ft) can be reached from the Simmen valley or Montreux. Simply watch the views from the restaurant. Or enjoy winter hiking, cross-country skiing or sliding in the snow park.
  • Säntis (2502 m / 8209 ft) is in East-Switzerland. This is the place to be for romantic winter hikes and snowshoe trekking.
  • First (2176 m / 7139 ft) is above Grindelwald in the Jungfrau region. You’ll look at the snow-capped Eiger and the Grindelwald valley. The world’s longest sledding run and many other snow adventures are available.

Mountains with panoramic views

The best mountains for iconic views of famous Swiss winter Alps are Mittelallalin, Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat, Eggishorn, Bettmerhorn and Männlichen.

  • Mittelallalin (3457 m / 11341 ft) near Saas-Fee has the world’s highest rotating restaurant. Watching the winter wonderland here is a must. You’re close to the highest snow peaks of Switzerland.
  • Jungfaujoch (3454 m / 11332 ft) has more than enough snow for a full day of playing. You’re amidst the highest tops of the Bernese Oberland. There are breathtaking views of the snow-covered Aletsch glacier.
  • Gornergrat (3090 m / 10137 ft) above Zermatt has great views of the snowy Matterhorn. You can enjoy sledding and easy winter hikes.
  • Eggishorn (2896 m / 9501 ft) and Bettmerhorn (2647 m) are in the Upper Rhone valley. Both offer beautiful views of the snowy Aletsch glacier and the surrounding mountains.
  • Männlichen (2343 m / 7687 ft) in the Jungfrau region offers a beautiful view of the mountain trio Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Sledding and winter hiking are possible too. This includes the famous trail to Kleine Scheidegg.
  • Pilatus (2119 m / 6952 ft) near Lucerne has panoramic views of Lake Lucerne and the Central and Bernese Alps.

Mountains to watch winter sports

The best mountain tops to watch snowboarders and skiers are Klein Matterhorn and Corvatsch.

  • Klein Matterhorn (3883 m / 12739 ft) is a very high mountain top above Zermatt. There’s a large paradise for skiers and snowboarders at the Swiss-Italian border. You can watch their skills from Europe’s highest restaurant or from other restaurants in this area. Or have some fun yourself in the snow park. This is located near the Furggsattel chairlift.
  • Corvatsch (3303 m / 10836 ft) in the Upper Engadine offers beautiful views of the Bernina mountains. You’ll see skiers and snowboarders slide away directly from the top station.

Mountains at lower altitude: no snow guarantee

Some mountains are lower, such as Rochers-de-Naye, Rigi and Bürgenstock. Thick snow packs are not guaranteed in warm winters. But if there’s snow, you’ll love the views and activities.

  • Rochers-de-Naye (2024 / 6604 ft) is above Montreux. The views over Lake Geneva and the surrounding snow tops are beautiful. Skiers take off from the top station. Cross-country trails start at various stations along the train route.
  • Rigi (1798 m / 5898 m) above Lake Lucerne has lots of winter hiking trails and sled runs. They’re combined with great views of the lake and its mountains.
  • Bürgenstock (1128 m / 3700 ft) is a luxury resort at Lake Lucerne. Enjoy skating at the ice rink or join one of the many guided winter tours.
