There are two ways to reach the resort: by bus from the railway station of Stansstad, or by a funicular that leaves from the boat dock “Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock”.
Option 1: funicular from the boat dock Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock
A funicular, called the 'Bürgenstockbahn', takes you up over the steep slope between the lake and the Bürgenstock resort. The funicular leaves next to the boat dock 'Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock'. This can be reached by boat from the Lucerne and other towns along the lake.
There are modern, direct shuttle boats between Lucerne and Kehrsiten. A single ride takes about 30 minutes. Many of the regular boats on Lake Lucerne stop at Kehrsiten as well.
Option 2: bus or car from Stans
There’s a direct bus leaving from the railway station of Stansstad, which is at a 26-minute train ride from Lucerne. The bus ride over a winding asphalt road and through meadows takes 25 minutes. There are 4 bus stops in and near the resort. Which one’s best, depends on your plans.
Arrival by car is an option too. There are underground parking facilities near the hotels.
Make a round trip
If you don’t spend the entire day at Bürgenstock, you can make a round trip in the Lake Lucerne region. Here are some suggestions:
- Visit Stanserhorn in the early morning. Then travel from Stans to Stansstad by train and to Bürgenstock by boat. Take the funicular down to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock and board a boat to Lucerne. Alternatively, you can take a boat to Weggis or Vitznau for a visit to Rigi Kaltbad or Rigi Kulm.
- Visit Pilatus in the early morning. Travel back to Lucerne and hop on the boat to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock. Travel back by bus to Stansstad and by train to Lucerne.
- Combine your visit with a long and scenic boat ride over Lake Lucerne: after your stay at Bürgenstock, get down to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock and board one of the boats to Flüelen, on the southern part the lake. Travel back by train or boat.
Dates of operation
Bürgenstock can be reached all year round. The bus is available in all seasons. The funicular runs nearly all year long.
Boats are available at Lake Lucerne all year. In winter, a restricted timetable applies.
The Hammetschwand lift is operational from April 7 to mid-November 2023. Exact dates depend on weather conditions. The elevator can be closed at any time due to bad weather. Sudden maintenance closures may occur too.
