We will be spending a few days in Montreux in October, and in addition to a day trip - weather permitting - to the Gornergrat/Matterhorn, we would like to do an informal cheese & chocolate tour of our own. I've looked at the popular Le Maison de Gruyere cheese and Maison Cailler chocolate sites noted in My Swiss Alps, but was wondering if there are other less "touristy" places in the area that would also provide tasting and buying options.

We've been to many other well known and touristy places in Switzerland, and with few exceptions, have not found them to be too crowded, or at least not enough to negatively impact the experience. We are after all tourists, and want to see and experience what many others do while having limited time in Switzerland. However, we also like to find places that are not as well known but equally enjoyable. Any cheese & chocolate suggestions for the Montreux area?

Hi CabinJon,

From Montreux, a trip to the chocolate factory in Broc and the cheese factory in Gruyeres is the most convenient and can be easily done in one day. You can plan your own trip or follow a tour. You can find planning tips from the following links:

You can also take the Chocolate Train from Montreux: www.myswissalps.com/chocolatetrain

If you prefer something different, you can travel a bit further to the Camille Bloch Chocolate Museum in Courtelary (about 2 hours by train from Montreux). You can find more details here: camillebloch.ch/en/visit/discovery-world/

Anna
