The Lake Lucerne region

The villages along Lake Lucerne are really inviting. The wide views across the lakes and many attractions to enjoy are a delight for first-time visitors to Switzerland. And there are plenty of reasons to return for a second time.

Towns and landscape

Lake Lucerne is a great region for first-time visitors to Switzerland. There are activities for anyone: Lucerne is a beautiful old town with museums, monuments and lots of shopping facilities. Zurich is less than an hour away if you want to do more city trips. Also there's plenty of alpine nature to enjoy.

You can make scenic trips by train or cable car to many mountain tops and enjoy the beautiful scenery from there. And of course there are boat trips on Lake Lucerne, again with great views all around.

We recommend the region for plane travelers too, either to begin or end their stay in Switzerland. The international airport of Zurich is just an hour by train from Luzern.

North of the lake, villages such as Weggis, Vitznau and Gersau are situated at the forested base of the Rigi. The Rigi is a mountain range with many hiking trails and great views from the top.

South of the lake, the higher mountains begin. The Stanserhorn is one of them, and further to the south there's the snow covered Titlis. The Pilatus is towering over the lake in the west, close to the city of Lucerne.

Must do's around Lake Lucerne

The town center of Lucerne is definitely worth a visit. Even if you just have a few hours time it's worth it. The old town center can easily be visited on foot from the rail station.

We think a trip with the cogwheel trains up the Rigi should be included too. It can be combined with a boat trip on Lake Lucerne, which is another thing not to miss. For a high-alpine experience, visit Mount Titlis.

Lucerne is ideal for first-time visitors. It's compact and lively, and close to many attractions for both good and bad weather.
